When we met up with Total HR almost eleven years ago, we were with another HR outsourcing company and we were quite unhappy with their services. Our unhappiness with them was a result of a lack of a hand-on approach, no sense of direction, and, most importantly, the services were poor. Total HR came in and described exactly what you would do for us. James Harwood, the head of Total HR, made specific promises and he has delivered on all of those promises.
Our decision to outsource our HR was because there is so much involved in dealing with HR issues that if you lack the proper background and experience, you often feel lost. You don’t how to find the right health insurance, you don’t know what to do in terms of insurance to protect the company, and you don’t know what to do when you have an employee issue. What we wanted was a company that was a little more hands-on, someone you can call and you know they will actually pick up the phone. I didn’t want to call and get a receptionist who then tells me that we’ll have Sally Sue call you back tomorrow or next week.
When you are a small business, you need answers right now. You can’t wait! That has been the most important detail in working with Total HR — we have been able to get quick responses and answers and on-time delivery. When an employee issue arises, somebody call us right away with a response, then they actually come out in person to help us resolve the problem. And that is exactly what it comes down to when you are a small business owner — you don’t want to have to worry about unnecessary details. You just want the problem to be taken care of and that is what I have experienced with Total HR.
What surprised me the most about Total HR in the beginning and to this day is that it really feels like a family. When I talk to James and the Total HR staff, although you are corporate and professional, there is always that personal touch. When I call, it is not just what do you need; it is: “Hey, how are you doing, Angela? Are you having a good day? How’s your family?” It is really nice to have someone say those kinds of things to you on a consistent basis when they are a vendor.
By focusing on the results, working with Total HR has helped me to change my business and, more importantly, it has removed the unnecessary stress and worry. As a small company or even as a mid-sized company, you want to know that the people that you are working with are professional and that they really care about your business. Although I would explain all the metrics to a business owner who is thinking about working with Total HR, I would explain further that you are not just a number, you are not lost in a big system where most of the people don’t even know your name. The staff has always been personable with me while at the same time getting the things done that I need to have accomplished.
A lot of business owners unfortunately get caught up at looking at the price of things. What they are not doing is actually looking at how much money and time they are wasting by not working with a value-added company like Total HR. When a company lacks the right direction, does not have the right executives in place, and is not receiving the answers that are needed, thousands of dollars can be wasted. In other words, you can’t afford not to do this.
As an employer, if you want to free up your time while making sure that the important HR details of your business are handled properly, the Total HR solution makes perfect sense. After all, a lawsuit can cost you a ton of money, but a lot of business owners don’t think about such consequences until it is too late.
